Stage 1: no discernible breast tissue - prepubertal. Stage 2: areolar widening and pigmentation, with some glandular tissue being palpable, with Montgomery gland development around the circumference of the areola; this stage may be subtle. Stage 3: further unmistakable growth of breast and areolar tissue. Stage 4: further breast enlargement, with a secondary mound of areola protruding from the breast tissue. Stage 5: adult breast size has been achieved, and the areola has now receded into the contour of the breast. Reproduced from Tanner ( 1962), by courtesy of Blackwell Scientific Publications.
